Jay Rasulo, Chairman, Walt Disney Parks & Resort announces

"What Will You Celebrate?" at Disney Parks in 2009

In 2009, Disney Parks will help guests commemorate special moments in their lives in a what that the whole family remembers together!

Celebration buttons at Disney Parks will enable Cast Members and Guests to join your celebration!

New in-park decor will invite guests at Walt Disney World and Disneyland to "Celebrate Today!"

NEW YORK (Sept. 18, 2008) – Everyone who visits a Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort theme park on their birthday in 2009 can get in free, as Disney Parks embraces a newly identified family travel trend called “celebration vacations.”

In this new national trend, American families are hitting the road to mark life’s special occasions – birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, reunions and more – with a “celebration vacation.” In 2009, Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts will lead this growing trend with new entertainment and services that allow guests to turn their personal milestones into magical Disney experiences.

And to kick it all off – a first-ever opportunity for guests to receive a free ticket to one of the Walt Disney World or Disneyland theme parks on their birthday in 2009.

“Birthdays are the one occasion that we all share every year,” said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, at an announcement event today in New York. “We thought a free birthday ticket would be the icing on the cake as we extend this new ‘celebration vacation’ trend to Disney Parks.”

Disney parks provide the perfect setting for this new style of vacation that celebrates the special occasions in life, Rasulo added.

Whether a guest is celebrating a birthday, an anniversary, Quinceañera or any special occasion, Disney parks already are filled with favorite characters, world-class attractions and entertainment, and legendary guest service – exactly the “something for everyone” that trend-watchers say families look for in a “celebration vacation.”

“The special moments in your life become truly magical when you celebrate at a Disney park,” Rasulo said. “Sharing a milestone at Disney connects families, friends and generations.”

Nationwide Survey Reveals ‘Celebration Vacation’ Trend

A nationwide survey of nearly 4,600 adults conducted by Ypartnership – co-author of the influential National Travel Monitor – showed that 70 percent of U.S. leisure travelers have taken a vacation with the primary purpose of marking a special occasion in their lives – a “celebration vacation,” as Ypartnership President and CEO Peter Yesawich termed it.

Respondents mentioned a broad range of events worth celebrating with a special vacation – not just birthdays and anniversaries but a first vacation with children, a job promotion or recovery from an illness.

Whenever something positive happens in their lives, people seek out ways to make them more special, Yesawich said, and vacations are clearly perceived as both an appropriate and desirable way to do so.

Time does pass quickly and there is a growing trend to slow down our frenetic lifestyles and stop to rejoice around the things that matter,” he said. “Families on ‘celebration vacations’ are looking to truly commemorate moments in their lives – in special places everyone can enjoy.”

Research showed that when they take that “celebration vacation,” families are looking for destinations that provide activities for children and – better yet – activities adults and children can enjoy together.

Given these findings, it’s not surprising that Disney Parks topped the list of destinations where families would most like to celebrate these special occasions,” Yesawich said.

Monthly Motivational Message:   "Choose an Attitude of Excellence"
"Excellence starts in the mind, and excellence has to do with the will."
People of excellence know how to turn right thinking into action.  We act out precisely what we take in.  In other words, we become what we think.  It is written, "For as he thinks within himself, so he is."  Living a life of excellence is merely a matter of thinking thoughts of excellence and programming our minds with the kind of information that will set us free.  Free to soar!  (Adapted from Great Attitudes, by Charles R. American Idol’ Is Going to Disney World

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts will create an “American Idol” attraction that will bring the television and pop culture phenomenon to life at the Walt Disney World® Resort. The joint announcement was made by Jay Rasulo, chairman of Disney Parks and Resorts; Simon Fuller, CEO of 19 Entertainment; and Keith Hindle, executive vice president of FremantleMedia Licensing.

The attraction, slated to debut in late 2008, will be located at Disney’s Hollywood StudiosTM  and will follow the model of the high-energy show. Disney Guests will be able to experience the challenge of auditioning, the rush of performing on stage in competition, or the thrill of judging the performances in a live interactive entertainment setting with all the glitz and glamour of the distinctive “American Idol” set.

That experience will include an audition process, open to all who register, where Guests perform “live” in front of a Disney’s Hollywood Studios producer to be cast in a theme park show. After backstage preparation – working with a vocal coach, hair and make-up – it’s lights up and showtime in front of a “live” audience and a panel of judges.

Guest performers with the highest votes will compete in an end-of-day Grand Finale show at the Walt Disney World Resort, and the winner of the Grand Finale show will receive a guaranteed reservation for a future regional stadium audition -- to ensure no waiting in long lines. But when it comes down to the television show auditions, everyone is treated equal.

“Millions of people have imagined themselves standing on the ‘American Idol’ stage,” said Rasulo. “We’re excited that we will be bringing this dream to life every day at Walt Disney World.”

Question: What gave Walt Disney his inspiration for the Audio-Animatronics figures?
Answer: One day Walt Disney discovered a miniature animated mechanical bird over one hundred years old in an New Orleans antique shop. Walt purchased the mechanical bird and showed it to Roger Broggie, head of the machine shop. Walt asked Broggie to use updated technologies to develop life-sized birds that would be capable of moving and talking.

As a business person I am constantly looking for ways to improve my company as well as myself.  Lee Cockerell is on my list of “teachers”. Lee is the former Executive Vice President of Operations for the Walt Disney World Resort.    I first heard Lee speak several years ago  at a Disney Authorized dealer conference.   So when he announced his retirement, I was disappointed that I would not have the opportunity to hear him again.   I later found out that he would be writing a book and creating a Business Advice Blog.  While his book is still in the development stage his blog is up and running.

You can find him at www.LeeCockerell.com.  His blog is well worth your time.

Both islands are new to Disney Cruise Line, increasing the seven-night Caribbean choices on the Disney Magic® to four itineraries. (Disney’s traditional eastern and western Caribbean itineraries will continue).

"Our guests continue to tell us that the Caribbean is a favorite destination for them," said Tom McAlpin, President of Disney Cruise Line. Disney Parks Decorate for the Holiday Season

Disney Parks on both coasts are transforming park icons into winter palaces. Thanks to new lighting and special effects packages, snow blankets Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland while Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World Resort is bathed in cascades of ice. New enchantment arrived in Disneyland Nov. 16, 2007. The holiday season finds Sleeping Beauty's Winter Castle covered in freshly fallen snow. With its new look, the castle will serve as a centerpiece for a daytime holiday celebration, and as a snow-capped stage for the new music, lighting and special effects that will precede the legendary "Believe...in Holiday Magic" nighttime fireworks spectacular. As evening arrives, the castle undergoes a transformation with special lighting effects and a new musical score.

A new lighting spectacle is also transforming
Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World Resort into an ice palace at holiday time. The castle is bathed in more than 200,000 tiny white lights and a nightly (5:45 p.m.) illumination follows live onstage appearances by Mickey and Minnie and the gang, Fairy Godmother, Cinderella and her Prince Charming. Cinderella Castle aglow will also play a supporting role in other Magic Kingdom entertainment such as live stage shows, the nighttime fireworks extravaganza "Holiday Wishes," and the after-hours Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, a specially-ticketed event. Disney's U.S. castles will be joined by those at Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland in lighting spectacles for the holidays. Disney's newly expanded global celebration was inspired by Disneyland Paris which began the lighting tradition in 2005.

People are always asking me what they should wear on their winter vacation to Disney;

1. Take a wind breaker jacket; it can get down right cold at night - 45 to 50 degrees.
2. Take a sweatshirt or sweater to wear with or without the jacket, even during the day it can be chilly.
3. a long sleeve shirt
4.  short  sleeve shirt
5. shorts - it can be really hot one day and very cool the next
6. long pants ( jeans work just fine)
7. light gloves and a hat
8. bathing suit - it can still be hot enough to swim and remember Disney heats their pools

You should be getting the picture;  you need to prepare for a wide range of temperatures.   When I visited Disneyworld last December I wore everything that is on the list.   Some days were great for shorts and a light top.  Other days I wore long pants and a light top.   The evening that I visited  MGM to see the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights called for  a tee shirt, long sleeve shirt, sweater, jacket, gloves and a hat.

Last week (Nov 6,7,8) I  attended a conference in Orlando; the day I visited Disney was warm and pleasant 78 degrees.   The next day the northeast was hit with snow and a cold front.  The cold front dipped into Orlando and the temperature was 45 degrees at night and 70 during the day!

Mother Nature can be a tricky girl from Dec to March so it's best to be prepared.

While working on one of those many winter projects that we promise ourselves that we’re going to do I came across an old Mickey Mouse cook book.  I had purchased the book sometime in the early 80’s.   I am still amazed at the simplicity of some of the recipes.

AMBROSIA SALAD

Served at the Crystal Palace in the 80’s

1cup mixed fruit or canned fruit cocktail

½ cup mandarin oranges

½ cup pineapple tidbits

½ cup Miniature marshmallows

1/3 cup coconut flakes

¾ cup dairy sour cream

¼ cup maraschino cherries, halves

¼ cup canned red seedless grapes

Darin fruits well.  Combine all ingredients and mix lightly but thoroughly. Chill overnight.  Serve in lettuce cups.

No one tells a story like Disney.  Just ask Chris Flesch.  As an Adventure Guide with Adventures by Disney, he’s told plenty of tales and made magical memories on the Disney Quest for the West itinerary.  We sat down with Chris to find out how he and others are taking guided travel experiences to a whole new level for your Clients.

D-Mail: Hey Chris, how are you?

Chris: I’m doing great.

D-Mail: Thanks for taking the time out of your day to do this interview.

Chris: No problem. I’m really looking forward to it.

D-Mail: What inspired you to become an Adventures by Disney Adventure Guide?

Chris: After graduating college, I decided to pursue my love of the outdoors by joining the Park Ranger Training Program.  After completing all of the requirements in spring of 2004, I joined the National Park Service as a Law Enforcement Park Ranger for Yellowstone National Park.  I worked as a ranger for about two years.

During this time, I had my first encounter with Adventures by Disney.  The group was visiting the park and I was able to share some of my experiences as a ranger with them.  I really enjoyed that experience and decided to do a little research to find out more about Adventures by Disney.

This seemed like it was the perfect fit for me, so I sent them an application and the rest is history!

D-Mail: What’s it like to be an Adventure Guide?

Chris: I love it! My role goes way beyond the level of a tour guide.  I actually get to interact with Guests and participate in all of the events.  I don’t just lead Guests from one place to another, I actually get to teach them about each destination throughout their adventure.  As I watch the Guests experience Yellowstone National Park, it’s pretty cool because it allows me to relive my first experience there.

Even though I only guide the Quest for the West itinerary, each day always brings something different. Some may think it gets repetitive, but it doesn’t.  Each group has its own chemistry, desires, needs and personalities which make every adventure unique.

D-Mail: Is there anything unique that happens behind-the-scenes?

Chris: Absolutely!  There’s so much planning involved to create the perfect vacation.  We arrive a few days early to ensure everything is in order.  Every night is spent preparing itineraries, photo postcards and special arrangements so we can always start the day off on the right foot.

We also make decisions for Guests that they’re not aware of.  For the special adults-only dinner, we give Guests vouchers for the meals and send them to the proper restaurant.  Many times Guests come back saying they missed us (guides) because they had no idea what to do or where to go.  At that point, they realize how much we take care of things.

Of course, we’re always prepared for emergencies by being two steps ahead.  In Wyoming there are certain places that don’t receive phone reception.  But if something happens, I can immediately direct them to the right place.

We want the behind-the-scenes work to appear seamless … and it does!  Even though I have a lot of responsibilities, I still make time to sit down with guests and give them individual attention.  When Guests ask how I have time to do everything, I just smile and say it’s “Disney magic!”

There’s never a dull moment behind the scenes!

D-Mail: Is it challenging to accommodate the wide variety of ages and interests among members of the group?

Chris: No, it’s much easier then you might imagine.  We offer such a wide range of activities that there is always something to suit everyone.  Some of these activities include horseback riding, whitewater rafting and visiting Old Faithful.  And if Guests have a particular interest to see or do something not on the itinerary, we try to incorporate this into the agenda or suggest how to do this during their free time.  It’s part of my job to make everyone happy.

I’ve seen people of all ages on this adventure, ranging from five to 70 years old. To accommodate the vast age difference we have certain activities that are geared towards specific age groups.  For instance, while we’re teaching adults about the make-up of the land, we’ll hand children laser thermometers so they can actually get a hands-on-experience.

Adults have said that this has been a great way to enhance the learning experience for children and it’s something only Disney would do.

D-Mail: What separates an Adventures by Disney vacation from other guided travel experiences?

Chris: That’s easy…it’s definitely the Disney Difference.  Disney takes care of all the details so Guests don’t have to worry about a thing.  Each Guest is greeted at the airport and once they arrive, it’s our responsibility to make sure they have an incredible time.  For example, they don’t even have to worry about their luggage when they arrive.  I literally take it off the carousel for them.  From the moment they arrive, they’re in Disney’s hands.

We provide Guests with a generalized daily itinerary that outlines the theme of the day, weather, activities and other useful information.  But, it’s only a generalized itinerary because we might have time to include additional activities or surprises.  We may encounter an unforeseen surprise like seeing a group of bears on the side of the road.  And we’ll stop to let everyone get a better view or take more pictures.

As part of the Disney Difference, we incorporate surprises along the way.  For example, the moment they open their hotel door they’ll receive their first surprise.  And there’s no telling when they might get another one, such as distributing a pin each day to highlight a particular adventure.  Every element of surprise helps create more lasting memories.

Another unique experience is provided by the local experts.  As a guide, I’m very knowledgeable about the destination, but the locals add another great dynamic to the trip.  The experts allow me to take a backseat to activities and let the Guests interact with someone who has real experience in that particular area.  The experience becomes more enriching and memorable when they meet someone who’s actually a cowboy that rangles horses daily, awakes by the rooster crowing and has come in contact with bears.  It brings a certain flair to the entire trip.

D-Mail: What are some of your favorite memories you have encountered as an Adventures by Disney Guide?

Chris: One of my favorite memories is the bond that forms between myself and the Guests.  The group really becomes a larger family and I become part of that family.  I’ve even had five individual families who met on their first Adventures by Disney vacation and they planned their next family vacation together on another Adventures by Disney itinerary.  And I just think, “Wow! These families had such a great time together that they want to spend their next family vacation as one large group.”  I’m thrilled that I was able to give them this opportunity to meet lifelong friends.

The farewell dinner is our conclusion to the entire trip, and it’s another one of my favorite memories.  During this dinner, we reflect on the highlights of the trip and Guests share their most treasured memory.  I’ve heard more then one Guest say that experiencing Yellowstone with me as their Adventure Guide has been the most memorable part of the trip.  This made me feel special because I had a strong influence on the Guests’ vacations.  As much as they’ll remember me and their experience, I will remember them too.

D-Mail: Well Chris, unfortunately that’s all the time we have. Thanks again for sharing your memories and experiences with us.

Chris: My pleasure. I’d never turn down an opportunity to talk about my experiences as an Adventure Guide. (laughing) Happy Holidays!

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- For decades, Walt Disney World guests have dreamed of spending the night in Cinderella Castle -- a night when, as the clock strikes 12, the magic doesn't end. And during "The Year of a Million Dreams," a 15-month celebration, the dream will finally come true for lucky guests following a magical transformation within the Magic Kingdom landmark.

Unused space originally envisioned as in-park accommodations for the Disney family is being transformed into Cinderella Castle Suite -- a place where lucky Walt Disney World guests will spend a dream-come-true night beginning in late January 2007.

Eligible guests will be selected as part of the unique Disney Dreams Giveaway, which began Oct. 1, 2006. For the castle stay, a Walt Disney World guest at a park or Downtown Disney will be selected randomly by early in the afternoon most days beginning in late January. The guests  will begin their dream-come-true night that evening at Cinderella's Royal Table, the popular restaurant located in Cinderella Castle. (Because the Castle stay requires same-day use, mail-in winners will be awarded a prize of comparable value.)

After the rest of the Magic Kingdom guests have headed home, these lucky guests can keep the castle lights burning brightly well into the night, wrapping themselves in the cozy comforts of their dream suite -- a salon, bedchamber and bathroom off of a private marble-floored lobby some four stories above the surrounding Magic Kingdom, replete with rich details befitting the 17th century fairytale and the French chateaus that inspired the design of Cinderella Castle:

Fluffy feather comforters beneath the regal canopy draping of two queen beds ... A cut-stone bedchamber floor inspired by the mosaic art masterpiece that adorns the castle's breezeway entrance to Fantasyland ... ... A parlor sofa that invites kicking off the shoes and curling up to read a chapter beneath a vaulted ceiling of the salon ... Rich, wood-paneled walls, stained-glass windows, and glimpses of the familiar gray castle stone.

While the idea of having living quarters inside Cinderella Castle dates to the time when Walt Disney World Resort was being planned, until now the space has been a backstage area -- essentially a blank canvas for a creative team from Walt Disney Imagineering. In the fashion of a Disney attraction, Cinderella Castle Suite is emerging regally from their meticulous research and design skills.

"The architecture of the castle, the Cinderella story and the suite are all interwoven," said Stephen Silvestri, the Walt Disney Imagineering show producer/director who is leading a team of designers and craftsmen in the dream makeover. "We want our guests to feel as though they are inside our castle but also immersed within the fantasy realm of the Cinderella story."

In the lobby of the suite, guests will discover a design of the fairytale pumpkin coach in the marble floor inlay. A memorable artifact from the story -- perhaps the famous glass slipper -- will adorn a cove. And through the doorway, the bedchamber and salon are appointed with furnishings in the style of the era of "the Louies," as Silvestri refers to the French rulers of the period inspiring the castle and Cinderella story. Nooks showcase sculpted pieces, clocks and porcelain all befitting the period. Doors are richly detailed; the walls are covered with wood panels and wall coverings. In the bathroom, hand-decorated copper basins sit atop the vanity, recalling a time when fresh water was carried to the bedchamber.

Despite all the careful attention to centuries-old details, the amenities of the Cinderella Castle Suite are definitely 21st century. There's a lavish garden tub plus a shower. There are also wheelchair accessible bathroom and bedroom facilities and elevator access to the suite. As for a 17th-century-style painting above a regal fireplace: it frames a modern 21st-century flat-screen television.

"We want to balance the practical realities within the fantasy place to make the experience truly a dream-come-true for our guests," Silvestri said.

Beginning December 1, the Disneyland® Hotel at the Disneyland® Resort will boast one of the most unique, and certainly one of the most “Disney,” VIP lodging experiences in the world - the all-new Mickey Mouse Penthouse.

Designed for “Big Cheeses” of all ages, the penthouse offers spectacular views of the Disneyland® Park, Disney’s California Adventure® Park and the Downtown Disney® District via floor-to-ceiling windows in addition to a happy mixture of luxury, technology and whimsy featuring one-of-a-kind décor, artwork and magical touches that bring to life all the fun that Mickey represents.

An overnight stay in the over-the-top penthouse is one of the dream surprises awarded most days beginning December 1 to a Disneyland guest at a Theme Park or at the Downtown Disney District randomly selected by early in the afternoon .

Eligible guests will be selected randomly as part of the unique Disney Dreams Giveaway* promotion during The Year of a Million Dreams Celebration at the Disneyland Resort.

The swanky penthouse, featuring an interior design of bold “Mickey” colors of black, white, red and yellow, occupies an expansive 1600 square feet and includes an open living room, dining and kitchen area, 2.5 baths and two bedrooms. Classic Mickey Mouse imagery and three-dimensional artwork dominate the design scheme throughout the penthouse.

As guests enter, Mickey will magically appear inside a foyer Magic Mirror, personally welcoming them to his one-of-a-kind penthouse. Upon entering the living room guests will encounter very stylized contemporary décor featuring eclectic furnishings and motifs of Mickey with a primary color palette of red, black and yellow. Hardwood floors and colorful area rugs accent the living room while the formal dining area seats eight guests. A built-in media wall is the focal point of the living room and features multiple flat screen TVs and a state-of-the-art home theater system worthy of Mickey’s status as one of Hollywood’s brightest stars.

The master bedroom features a number of luxury amenities including a king size bed, lounge chairs, a “37 flat panel TV, a DVD player and is decorated with animation maquettes of Mickey Mouse in many of his most famous film roles. (Maquettes are three-dimensional models used by Disney animators to effectively render a character in two dimensions and are highly sought-after collectibles.) The master bath includes a steam shower, Jacuzzi tub and a double vanity with a built-in TV in the mirror.

The second bedroom has a more playful feel and is the perfect setting for little ones who wish to have the locale double as a playroom. The main “conversation piece” in the room is a vintage animator’s desk that will add to the Mickey Mouse and animation inspired storyline for the penthouse. The bedroom also features a stylized built-in armoire with a flat panel TV, DVD player and video games.

NEW YORK-Disney officials were in New York on Wednesday to give top producers and travel trade press a sneak preview of some of the new attractions that will be opening in conjunction with its Year of a Million Dreams Celebration. Noteworthy among the group is "Finding Nemo the Musical," an adaptation of the Pixar film, which will open this January in Disney's Animal Kingdom. Travel Agent saw a preview of two of the show's numbers and inspected the puppets of Marlin and Dory and we can say with much confidence that it seems like a real winner. The show is scheduled to begin in previews at the 1,500-seat Theater in the Wild next month. (MJ)
